Amanda: The most recent pleasant surprise was Tell the Wolves I’m Home by Carol Rifka Brunt. As a book club pick, I didn’t think I’d be terribly impressed… but I really was. I loved the main characters and thought the story was brilliant. The last book that really blew my socks off was Vellum: The Book of All Hours by Hal Duncan. In the end I decided it had the perfect title. The story was as rich, multi-textured, and layered as only fine vellum can be.
KJ: I think the book that most surprised me was Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You. I’m really not someone who is moved to tears by a book, but this one got me. I expected it to be a sticky sweet love story, and I was really taken by surprise by the emotional impact it had on me. If you have ever loved or cared for someone with emotional or physical limitations, this book will pack a punch.
